Trip to Kyoto Day 1

by Nicole

On July 3rd, Elaine, Kaylyn, Duncan, Charlie and I went to Kyoto. Elaine, Charlie and Duncan had to work, but Kaylyn and I had the day off. So, Kaylyn and I waited for Elaine, Charlie and Duncan to finish before we left for Kyoto.

Then Elaine, Kaylyn, Duncan, Charlie and I got on an express train to Tokyo. Then at Tokyo, we will get on a shinkansen (bullet train) to Kyoto. The express train from Omika to Tokyo and the shinkansen (bullet train) from Tokyo to Kyoto cost ¥32,180 round-trip. It is a little expensive, but because we are only going once, I think it is worth it. We were on the express train for about 1 hour and 40 minutes. We were on the shinkansen for about 2 hours and 20 minutes.

Our hotel is Kyoto Tower Hotel Annex. The Kyoto Tower Hotel Annex was a decent western style hotel. The location is really close to the main Kyoto Station and Kyoto Tower, so the Hotel is very convenient for using public transportation and local sightseeing. Room size is small, but it wasn’t too small. There were three beds in the room that fit snug. However, the bathrooms were pretty small.  Elaine and Kaylyn would get water everywhere, but I was used to the small size because the bathroom in my apartment is the same size. Even though the room and bathroom was small, we could keep the room at a good temperature because of the air conditioning. The service from the staff was good and the hotel was kept tidy by a team of cleaners that come every morning. It is very interesting watching them work. One downside of this hotel is that it is very old hotel. You will feel like you traveled in back in time to before the 20th century.

When booking the hotel, they didn’t have any rooms that could hold 5 people, so we ended up getting two rooms. One with two beds and one with three beds. We just ended up splitting by gender. We didn’t care if it was going to work out like this when we were booking the rooms, but it worked out this way in this hotel.

We checked into our hotel at about 9:30 pm, and spent the next 30 minutes figuring out where we were going to eat for dinner. On our way to the hotel, we walked a little too far. However, through this little adventure, we ended up seeing the sign for a yakitori shop. We decided to eat our dinner there, and it was a very yummy dinner.
